Dr. Lara Aunio is a New Jersey (NJ) licensed psychologist who provides individual and family therapy, school and professional consultation, and assessments for children, adolescents, and young adults. She has a wealth of experience working with individuals across the lifespan in hospital (inpatient and outpatient), school, and clinical settings. She specializes in treatments for trauma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, and stress/anxiety.

She has extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and incorporates other related evidence- based practices (e.g., acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), parent management training) to treat all aspects of the individual. She has a deep background in the treatment of youth with a history of trauma. She has implemented approaches like Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) and Coping Cat.

Dr. Aunio embraces qualities that she values in a clinician, including flexibility, effective communication, cultural competence, and collaboration.  Dr. Aunio believes in a team approach to treatment. She works with key players in a patient’s life to reinforce interventions and skills in everyday life.

She is a leader in the field and is passionate about advocating and educating families, providers, and the community about evidence-based treatments like CBT. She has presented various lectures to medical providers, clinical staff, and the community about mental health issues and interventions.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Aunio has a specialization in health psychology and a research background on the effects of chronic illness on patients, siblings and their families. In addition to her work at the CBT Center, she is an Inpatient Pediatric Psychologist at RWJ Children’s Specialized Hospital, where she supports patients receiving rehabilitation therapies with a history of brain injury, chronic illness, chronic pain and other medical illnesses.

Dr. Aunio provides telehealth services outside of work and school hours. She looks forward to meeting you and helping identify your needs in a collaborative and accessible way!
